Why Worship Idols?

You two have asked a question that God tried to get the idol worshipers of Isaiah’s day to ask themselves. Isaiah talked about how silly it was to make idols and then bow down to them. He wrote about how a person would take a piece of wood, cut it in half, and with half of it he would form an idol and the other half he would use as firewood. He wrote: “And no one considers in his heart, nor is there any knowledge nor understanding to say, ‘I have burned half of it in the fire, yes, I have also baked bread on its coals; I have roasted meat and eaten it; and shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?” (Isaiah 44:15-19). Notice that God says such a person does not have “any knowledge nor understanding.” God is saying it simply does not make any sense. It is unreasonable. And such a people will not say, “Is there not a lie in my right hand?” (44:20), even though it is obvious that a block of wood cannot have any real, spiritual power.
