When Our Heroes Disappoint Us

Do you think of certain people as heroes and as people you look up to? You might admire someone famous. Or maybe your heroes are people closer to you that you know really well. Heroes are often called “role models” because they teach us by their actions and words. Often, people try to become like their heroes in one way or another, trying to copy their abilities and lifestyles. Unfortunately, not all our role models are good ones; our heroes can disappoint us by the bad choices they make.

It seems that every week or so we hear about someone famous—a hero and role model for thousands of young people, who loses his job, his freedom, his health, or even his life because of bad choices he has made. That hurts, doesn’t it?

This isn’t something new, though; the Bible is full of stories about famous people whose wrong choices hurt many others. We know that everyone makes mistakes. Romans 3:23 says we all sin. But a good role model will try to correct his mistakes, and change his life. He knows that he is an example to others.

Well, then, is there such a thing as a perfect hero, a role model who never makes mistakes or needs to change his life? Yes! His name is Jesus Christ. Jesus was tempted to do wrong just like we are, but He never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus left “an example for you to follow in His steps” (I Peter 2:21). So, no matter how many other people disappoint us by their bad choices, there is always one special role model who will never disappoint us—our hero, Jesus Christ!
