What is the next sign to know when Jesus comes back? What should we look for?

From Issue: Discovery 12/1/2002

Dear Caroline,

That is an excellent question. Everyone ought to be interested in the Second Coming of Jesus. The Bible teaches that it will be a magnificent event (read 1 Thessalonians 5:13-18). The apostle Peter wrote that it is something that every faithful child of God should look forward to (2 Peter 3:12-13).

Many people teach that there are certain signs that Christians should look for in order to know when Jesus will come again. Based upon what they thought were “signs,” some throughout history have even predicted the exact time of when Jesus would return, but all of these men failed in their predictions. The Bible teaches that no one knows when Jesus will return, except God the Father (Matthew 24:36). When Jesus was on Earth, even He did not know; nor did His apostles. The truth is, Jesus’ Second Coming will be unexpected. The Bible says that the day Jesus returns will be “as a thief in the night” (2 Peter 3:10). Contrary to what many people think, the “signs” Jesus mentioned in Matthew 24:1-35 were in reference to the destruction of Jerusalem, and not to the Second Coming of Jesus.

Instead of looking for signs of Jesus’ return, the Bible says that we need to be more interested in living righteously all the time in order to “be ready” for His return.
