Was Jesus Married?
Dear Lee,
That is a good question. There is nothing in the Bible that points to Jesus being married. Actually, everything we read in the Bible suggests that Jesus did not have a wife while on Earth. Jesus said of his earthly life: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head” (Matthew 8:20). We know that Jesus was a man, and thus experienced the same emotions that we do. Jesus taught that marriage is good, when it is in harmony with God’s plan for man and woman.
Jesus knew from the time he was just a child that He was on Earth to do his Father’s work (Luke 2:49). It would have been difficult for Christ to have been fully focused on the work of the Father if He had been married (read 1 Corinthians 7:32-34). Also, the Bible tells us that Christ was already engaged. He was not engaged to an earthly fiancée like you might think, but to a spiritual bride. Christ was engaged to be married to his bride, the church. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25, also read Revelation 21:2). The Bible nowhere reveals that Jesus was married while on Earth. But, when he died and redeemed humans from sins, the church became his spiritual bride.
