Prophecies about Jesus
Do you know what will happen two years from today? No, you do not. No human being, depending only on his own knowledge, can look into the future and tell what is going to happen. This is why the prophecies (statements about future events) of the Old Testament are so amazing.
Did you know that there are more than 300 prophecies in the Old Testament that point to Christ? It’s true! And that is exactly what we would expect, because Jesus said that the Old Testament scriptures spoke about Him (see Luke 24:44). Let us think about a few of the prophecies that tell of the coming of Jesus.
It was written that Christ would come from the family of Abraham (Genesis 22:18; see Galatians 3:16), and that He would be of the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10; see Matthew 1:1-2). A prophet said that Jesus would be born in the town of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; see Matthew 2:1-6). In chapter 53 of his great book, the prophet Isaiah gave several very clear prophecies about how Jesus would die for our sins. Because of His death, if we obey Him, we can find forgiveness for all our wrongs. Chapter 53 in Isaiah is what the man from Ethiopia was reading as he, riding in his chariot, returned to his country (Acts 8:27-35). One of the Lord’s preachers, Philip, told the man that Isaiah’s prophecy was about Jesus Christ. King David also prophesied that even though Jesus would die, God would raise Him from the dead (Psalm 16:10; see Acts 2:24-28).
These fascinating Old Testament prophecies are very strong proof of the fact that the Bible is truly the Word of God, and that we can believe its message about Jesus, His dear Son.
