The Blue Whale

There is big—and then there is the blue whale. Elephants are big, but they aren’t “blue whale big.” Even though Argentinosaurus—the largest dinosaur man has ever discovered—was huge (an estimated 100 tons or 200,000 pounds), it still was only about half the size of the largest known blue whale.

Blue whales are born big and then become enormous. A baby blue whale (called a calf) is almost 25 feet long at birth and weighs as much as a small pick-up truck (6,000 pounds). The calf feeds on its mother’s rich milk and gains a whopping 200 pounds every day during the first year of its life. By the time the baby becomes a full-grown whale, it can reach 100 feet in length (as long as 3 school buses) and weigh nearly 200 tons (or 400,000 pounds…or 15 school buses!).

Blue whales have a fluke (tail) used to propel them forward under water. This powerful fluke is wider than a racquetball court.

Although the heart of an elephant is big (weighing as much as an average seven-year-old child—50 pounds!), the blue whale owns the largest heart on Earth. Its heart is slow (beating only six or seven times per minute), but it is huge—the size of a small car, weighing nearly 1,300 pounds. What’s more, the whale’s largest blood vessel (called the aorta) is so big that a Basset Hound could easily crawl through it.

The blue whale also owns the biggest tongue on the planet. It’s tongue is so large that about 25 children could stand on it at one time. It weighs over 5,000 pounds—as much as a medium-sized Asian elephant!

When a blue whale eats, it can fill its 20-foot-long mega mouth with over 13,000 gallons of water in one gulp. Hopefully a lot of its favorite food—krill, which are shrimp-like animals—are in these 13,000 gallons of water. The whale then uses its mighty tongue to push the water through its baleen, which are like thousands of bristles hanging from its upper jaw. The whale strains the water through its well-designed baleen, while trapping the krill (and other crustaceans, as well as fish). The whale then uses its perfectly designed tongue to scrape the baleen clean of all of its catch. (Have you ever licked your teeth “clean” and found a piece of food left over from your last meal?) A blue whale can eat about 8,000 pounds of seafood every day. That’s the equivalent of eating seven average-size cows…every day!

Whales communicate with other whales using short and high-pitched “songs.” Whereas a noisy jackhammer can reach 100 decibels and a loud jet engine 140 decibels, scientists have measured the sounds that whales make at up to 188 decibels. A whale’s communication ability is so powerful that researchers have recorded their songs from over 500 miles away. Yes, similar to how God gave Adam and Eve the ability to speak and communicate on Day Six of Creation, God created whales on Day Five with an amazing “messaging system”—one that is so loud that it can be heard underwater the distance that separates Washington, D.C. from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Can you believe that evolutionists claim that whales evolved from land animals? In fact, the standard evolutionary explanation is that a sea creature evolved (over millions of years) into a land animal, which millions of years later went back into the water and evolved into a blue whale. (Are we really supposed to believe that?!)

The images above illustrate the false theory of whale evolution.

Allegedly, a small, wolf-like animal began eating fish and started living more and more of its life in the water. Over millions of years, allegedly, this wolf-like creature began living full-time in the oceans. Its front legs became flippers, while its back legs became tiny and non-functional. The creature’s dog-like tail became a fluke. It’s teeth disappeared and then perfectly designed baleen conveniently evolved in just the right place.

Where is the proof for such a “whale of a story”? Actually, there is no proof—there is only evolutionists’ interpretation of various fossils they have found in the ground. The fact is, no one has ever proved (or will ever prove) that the blue whale’s great-great-great…granddaddy was a wolf-like, land animal—any more than this wolf-like animal had a great-great-great…granddaddy that was a fish.

Whereas humans and most land animals could survive for only a few minutes in the frigid waters that marine mammals call home, God designed whales perfectly for life in the sea. The blue whale is able to withstand bitterly cold water temperatures, because of the tens of thousands of pounds of blubber in its body. This blubber, which is made up mostly of fat, functions as insulation, helping keep the whale from freezing to death in chilly waters. What’s more, when krill are scarce, blue whales can live off of the energy stored in their blubber.

Does it really make sense to believe that a wolf-like, land animal evolved into a whale over millions of years? How did it evolve the many specialized features of whales, such as the capability to withstand freezing cold temperatures? How did a wolf-like animal’s nose move to the top of its head and become a blowhole (as evolutionists assert)? How did the mother whale (called a cow) evolve the necessary ability to pump her rich milk into the mouth of her baby, rather than simply allow the calf to suck in the milk as land mammals do? (If calves had to try to suck 200 pounds of milk a day, they would likely suck in a lot of water and die.) How did the supposed wolf-like ancestor of whales evolve the ability to endure the extreme water pressure that whales feel when they dive hundreds or thousands of feet below the surface? Such pressure would kill most animals.

Neither the blue whale nor any other whale evolved these specialized features. No wolf-like creature fathered these amazing animals. God designed these wonderful whales to live in water. These magnificent creatures are a reminder of their Creator’s majesty! The Bible says that on the Fifth Day of Creation, “God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind” (Genesis 1:21).

“Let them praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created…. Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all the depths…. Let them praise the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted.”

Psalm 148:5,7,13

“O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of your possessions—this great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great.”
Psalm 104:24-25
