Life is like a Flower
How long will you live? The Bible says, “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). In other words, a full life might be seventy or eighty years in length. Of course, we do not know how long anyone will live. Even if we do live to be eighty, our lives will still seem short when compared with eternity (“forever”). Think about this: God has always lived, and He will always live (see Psalm 90:2). If we watch a clock for a minute, it seems like a long time. But, if we compare a minute to a year, a minute seems really short!
The Bible also says this about life: “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away” (1 Peter 1:24). Flowers are very beautiful when they are blooming, but they only bloom for a little time. Eventually, they wither away. Life is like that. If we live as God wants us to live, our lives are like beautiful flowers in His sight. After we die, we will live forever with God.
Sometimes, however, people live as though this life is all there is. They do not try to please God; they just please themselves. This is why Jesus said: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).
