Is the Earth Flat?

As hard as it may be to believe, there were many people in the past who believed that the Earth is flat. In fact, some people still believe this. If people read their Bibles, they would see that such an idea is wrong. In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah was trying to teach his people about how powerful God is. As he did, he gave a description of the Earth. He said this about God: “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth…” (Isaiah 40:22).

Notice that Isaiah used the word “circle” to describe the Earth. He wrote in Hebrew, and the word he used means, “a ball, a circle, a sphere, something round.” He was not talking about something flat, but about something circular (like a basketball).

But how did Isaiah know this about the Earth? Many people in his day thought the Earth was flat. Even when Columbus made his voyage to the New World in 1492, some people may have thought his ships would fall off the “edge” of the Earth!

They should have read their Bibles. If they had, they would have known, like Isaiah did, that the Earth is round. God told Isaiah the truth on this important topic, and Isaiah wrote it down. We can trust the Bible, because it is always right!
