Why does Genesis say that when Cain went to Nod people were there?

Q.

Why does Genesis say that when Cain went to Nod people were there? It says he had a wife but the only people where Cain lived were Adam, Eve, Abel, and Cain. So, he must have gotten a wife in Nod.

A.

Cain, Abel, and Seth were not the only children of Adam and Eve. After Seth was born, Adam and Eve had other sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4). Cain’s wife must have been one of Adam and Eve’s daughters, or granddaughters.

The Bible does not say that Cain found a wife or other people at Nod. It simply says that Cain went to Nod, and there his wife had a child named Enoch. It might be that years after Cain went to Nod, one of Adam and Eve’s descendants joined him there. Whatever the case, all human beings are the descendants of Adam and Eve–even Cain’s wife.
