Faith in Things I Cant See?

From Issue: Discovery 9/1/2015

Dear Digger Doug,

How can I have faith in something I haven’t seen—like God?

Dear reader,

That is a very good question! But let me ask one very similar—have you ever seen your lungs? If you have never seen them, and most likely you never have, how do you know you really have lungs? You know that you have lungs because you see the effects of them working. You could not live long enough to read this issue of Discovery if you did not have lungs! And what about the air you breathe? You cannot see it, but you know that it exists.

God is the same way. While we cannot see Him, we know that He exists from the world around us. The Universe is so perfectly made that it had to have a Designer. For example, did you know that the Earth is the exact distance from the Sun for life to be possible? If it were even just 10% closer, it would be too hot to live on Earth. And if it were just 10% farther away from the Sun, the Earth would be nothing but a ball of ice. So we can know that God exists, even though we cannot see Him, because of the amazing design of the world around us. Like Paul said in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made….” We have faith that God exists because He has revealed Himself through nature since the beginning of the world. There are other ways to know that God exists, but seeing the design He placed in the Universe is one good way.
