How Did Noah Have the Skill to Build the Ark?

by  Digger Doug

Dear Digger Doug,

If Noah lived so long ago, how did he have the skill to build the Ark?

Dear reader,

Thanks for writing with your thoughtful question. Many times, we think that to be smart or capable at building, people must have modern tools such as computers and technology. We often think about people in the past as being less intelligent than us. Some of this way of thinking may be because many books, magazines, and TV shows teach that humans evolved over millions of years. They teach that modern humans are “the most evolved.” That is simply not true. Humans did not evolve. When God created the first humans, Adam and Eve, they were extremely intelligent. They were not ignorant “cavemen” like creatures. Furthermore, we read that Adam and the people who lived after him had very long lives. This would have given them a long time to learn things. Just think about it. As you grow, you learn more about math, science, how to drive, how to build, and so much more. Imagine how much you would learn if you lived to be 900 years old. Noah was 600 years old when the Flood came (Genesis 7:6). He certainly would have learned about how to build things. Some of the most amazing structures ever built (such as the Tower of Babel and the great pyramids) were created by ancient men and women. Also, notice how the Bible tells us that God talked to Noah, explaining to him what to do. While Noah would have known how to build certain things, he probably would never have known how to build something as awesome as the Ark. We read about some of God’s instructions, but He most likely gave Noah even more that are not written in the text. Only God could have known how big the Ark needed to be to hold all the animals and other cargo. Genesis 6:22 tells us that “Noah did everything just as God commanded him.”
